American West

The American West, stretching across the expansive plains and rugged Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, bears witness to a complex tapestry of cultural change, where the winds of transformation simultaneously carry away time-honored traditions and breathe life into novel cultural and religious expressions. The West's historical narrative reflects a dual reality: the erosion of indigenous traditions in the face of westward expansion, manifesting in the displacement and marginalization of Native American communities, alongside the birth of new traditions as diverse settlers and immigrant groups contribute to the evolving regional identity. While some traditional practices have faced the threat of extinction, the West's multicultural dynamism has cultivated a unique blend of customs, beliefs, and artistic expressions, forging a contemporary tapestry that embraces both the echoes of the past and the innovations of the present. In this ever-changing landscape, the American West stands as a living testament to the delicate balance between the preservation and evolution of cultural traditions.

These images and videos were shot over the course of many years of travel. Many were taken on assignment, others are snap shots while traveling through the regions and interacting with the myriad of communities. Thank you to those who allowed me to tell their stories and showcase ancient and new traditions, often simultaneously.
