I spent a week on a small island in Guna Yala, off the Caribbean coast of Panama. The islands are small—narrow strips of sand and coral pushed up from the sea, some no more than a few hundred steps across. Villages sit tight on them, houses close, everything within reach of the water. I’ve spent time in a lot of remote places, but this felt distinct. Not untouched, but self-contained. Intentional. The Guna have held onto this way of living for generations, and have fought off the growing tourism industry of the rest of Panama, and you feel that in every interaction, every movement through the day.

We stayed in tents set up directly on one of the islands with ViaVenture Central America, a guiding outfit that works closely with the local communities. It’s really the only way to gain access in a way that feels right. There’s no luxury infrastructure here, no resorts or built environments designed for comfort. Just a few tents, the sound of the ocean, and a rhythm you fall into quickly. Days consisted of breakfast provided by the sea, activities such as hiking, snorkeling, sailing on traditional boats, and experiencing local traditions. Diner was always a fresh catch.

What stayed with me most was the sense of community. The women sewing molas in the shade, hands moving constantly. Fishing boats coming and going. Kids moving between houses, between islands. Meals shared without much ceremony. It’s a place built on proximity and dependence, where everything feels connected. It’s adventure, but not loud or performative. It’s quieter than that. More human.
