How do you tell the story of someone whose greatest influence was felt behind the scenes?

The Man with the Big Hat explores the life of legendary Texas songwriter Steven Fromholz, an artist whose work shaped generations of musicians while he remained largely unknown outside the circles that admired him most. Built around intimate interviews, newly uncovered archives, and previously unheard recordings, the film reexamines a life defined less by fame than by artistic conviction.

As Director of Photography, my role was to create a visual language that felt as personal and reflective as the story itself. Filmed across Texas, we combined cinematic interviews with observational imagery of the landscapes, rivers, and small towns that shaped Fromholz's life. Rather than relying on spectacle, our approach emphasized quiet moments, natural light, and a strong sense of place, allowing the film's emotional weight to emerge through atmosphere and character.

The result is an intimate portrait of an influential artist whose legacy continues to resonate far beyond the recognition he received during his lifetime.
